I’m Benedict Stanberry — I research, write, teach, speak and consult on the subjects of health economics, outcomes and management.

Today, in addition to establishing HEOR Institute, I am an independent health economics and outcomes research consultant — partnering with medical device and life sciences companies to develop the economic and clinical evidence that drives successful market access.

But I haven’t always been an HEOR specialist…

I began my career as a medical lawyer, working on some of the earliest digital health projects before moving into management consulting in 2001.  Shortly afterwards, however, I was diagnosed with advanced colorectal cancer and given only a thirty per cent chance of survival.

Upon my recovery, I served as interim chief executive of a Brussels-based healthcare NGO.  I was also elected as a local councillor in south-west London, where my responsibilities included overview and scrutiny of healthcare services.  From 2006 to 2009, as a director of a private healthcare provider, I helped establish a new model of cancer care for the south of England.

Between 2009 and 2014, I lived in Dubai — designing and delivering executive education programmes for healthcare organisations across the Middle East and Asia-Pacific regions.  I continued this vocation upon my return to the UK when I founded the Institute of Healthcare Leadership and Management (IHLM) in Oxford.

Since 2022, I’ve generated economic and clinical evidence across a range of therapeutic areas.  My commissioned and published research includes:

  • economic modelling for peripheral arterial and venous diseases, cancer diagnostics, hernia repair, robotic surgery, caesarean births, therapeutic paracentesis and incontinence management, and
  • systematic reviews and meta-analyses of endovascular and oncologic interventions.

I undertook each of these projects, from inception to completion and pull-through, in close partnership with the commissioning company’s team in a variety of countries — including the UK, France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands.

Alongside my consulting engagements, I’m the founder of HEOR Institute — a digital academy for health economists, market access and medical affairs professionals.

I hold both LLB and LLM degrees in law from Cardiff University, a Global Executive MBA from the world-ranked Henley Business School, and an Executive MSc in Healthcare Decision-Making from the London School of Economics – a programme delivered in collaboration with NICE (the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) in which I achieved a distinction.  I’m a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine and a member of ISPOR’s Medical Device and Diagnostics Special Interest Group.
